Program description:

Interested in volunteering in India? Want to get involved in the work of locally-based NGOs? Want to learn a whole range of skills whilst gaining useful expeience?

Development in Action (DiA) is recruiting candidates to join our 2-month summer scheme and our 5-month Year Out scheme volunteering with Development NGOs in India. Volunteers get the chance to experience everyday life in India, as well as making a real contribution to good causes through volunteer projects.

We are recruiting candidates for placements in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Indore and Pondicherry. The work volunteers are involved in varies at each placement, but may include:

*formal and non-formal education

*work with disability  groups

*work with women’s groups/micro-credit  unions

*environmental work

*fieldwork/research

*fundraising/administration

During their placements, candidates get hands-on experience of grassroot NGO work, and are encouraged to engage in the wider issues of global citizenship and sustainable development. Each volunteer is supported in the planning and production of a ’DIA Project’. The DiA Projects build on the volunteer’s experience to produce awareness-raising or development education resources (e.g. contribution to DiA’s travelling exhibition).

Candidates do not require any special skills or qualifications. We are looking for cultural sensitivity, enthusiasm and humility. An interest in global issues and commitment to DiA’s development education goals are also desirable.

The deadline for applications is 24 January 2005. Selection Days will be held on 19-20 February 2005. The 2 month placements run from July to August 2005. The 5 month placements run from September 2005 to February 2006. Placement fees are £550 for a two-month placement and £1000 for a five-month placement. The fees include pre-placement training, an induction week in India, accommodation for the entire

duration of the placement, a potential DiA Project mini-grant and post-placement project support.
