When teaching in China you will be working in primary schools or modern secondary schools, the range of teaching on offer is diverse. Where you work will depend upon your preference and where teachers are most needed at the time, but there are opportunities to teach students aged from eight to 18. Project details: You will be teaching at middle schools which are similar to Secondary / High Schools in Yanqing which is around 70 km from the center of Beijing. Why the project needs volunteers: In many schools children do not actually get a chance to practice day to day conversation and assessments are not oral. Therefore, volunteers will need to focus on basic conversational English, which means helping students speak simple English. By teaching young people English you will be able to make a positive impact on their lives and make more opportunities available to them, for example by going to university, getting jobs in tourism and business and commerce. What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project: As a teacher you need to be someone who can think on their feet, be dynamic and use your initiative and imagination. You need to be confident, resourceful and thrive on a challenge. You also need to enjoy working with young people. Your role as a volunteer: You bring to your project the energy and enthusiasm that sustains this ongoing volunteer 'movement'. You may be there for a relatively short time, but your efforts will ensure your project's future. You will be teaching English and extra-curricular activities. You will find that you focus primarily on conversational English. You need to be aware that sometimes Chinese people say what they think you want to hear rather than speaking frankly so as to save face and try to please you. A negotiation and compromise is always preferable to confrontation. You will find that you need to use your initiative and be proactive on the project as your colleagues may not be that forthcoming in telling you exactly what needs to be done and when. Where the project is based: You will be based in Yanqing, and in close proximity to The Great Wall of China. Beijing, which is 1 ½ to 2 hours away would be ideal for visiting at weekends. There is plenty to see and do there and you can visit The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square. You can also sample the capitals' delicious range of food and experience the nightlife. Please book your flight to arrive into Beijing (airport code PEK) on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup. FYI - Yanqing is a typical working town within the suburbs of Beijing (on many maps it's still counted as part of Beijing). It's quite industrial but volunteers love it there and the feedback is really good.
