With courses from two to 16 weeks and a range of sports from traditional dinghy sailing to the adrenalin-packed kitesurfing, the Sail and Board Sport (SBS) courses make the most flexible gap year/career break possible.
We follow the sun and wind around the world, travelling to some great training locations. From October to May we’re sailing, surfing and windsurfing in Sydney, Australia. From May to October we’re based at Vassiliki, Greece, for sailing and windsurfing. We go kitesurfing on the Caribbean island of Margarita in November and January.
We combine professional training with international adventure - but it doesn’t stop there. If you are serious about getting paid work as a watersports we actively help you find work. Click onto flyingfishonline.com for more details of our highly effective recruitment services.
The Basic Windsurf Instructor Traineeship leads to RYA qualification as a Windsurf Instructor Level 1. The first two weeks of the course include performance coaching, first aid and rescue boat driving. The next two weeks are for on-water skills development under the guidance of expert coaches - we also include basic surf training in Australia and mountain biking in Greece.
Then comes two weeks of instructor training, focusing on the coaching needs of beginners. To gain the instructor qualification you need to demonstrate personal windsurfing ability at RYA Level 3, good communication skills, in-depth theory knowledge, group management ability, safety awareness and an effective coaching style.
On completing the course you will be a qualified experienced instructor, comfortable in the professional environment. You will be eligible to go straight into an Upgrade course to qualify as intermediate instructor. As a Fish graduate, you can take advantage of the free Flying Fish careers advice and job placement service to find work all over the world for the rest of your gap year.
We combine professional training with international adventure - but it doesn't stop there. If you are serious about getting paid work in watersports we actively help you find work.
Flying Fish places
Our RYA training base in Australia is at Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Sydney, capital of southern hemisphere watersports. You surf Sydney's northern beaches, sail at Pittwater and windsurf on Sydney Harbour. Of course, there's much more to Sydney than watersports and you won't be stuck for entertainment in this vibrant city by the sea.
Multi-sport options
We offer several multi-sport courses combining windsurfing with dinghy sailing, surfing and kitesurfing. If you want a different combination you can create an individual programme by bolting together two or more single sport courses. Many people think beyond an SBS Traineeship and go on to International Yacht Training, Professional Snow Sports or Professional Dive Training.
