Pioneered by a group of Work the World
students in summer 2006, these team projects are run by our own full-time Project Leaders in partnership with local doctors and get you really involved in addressing the grass roots issues of HIV and AIDS awareness.
Africa’s battle with HIV and AIDS is without doubt one of the greatest problems facing the continent today. In 2006, 63% of all people infected with HIV were living in sub-Saharan Africa, and in that year alone an estimated 2.8 million more became infected – more than in the rest of the world put together.
Our HIV outreach projects use the skills and enthusiasm of student volunteers, under the guidance of local doctors and project leaders, to raise awareness about the risks and realities of the virus among key social groups and to improve opportunities for those already living with HIV and AIDS.
The other main area of work will be to explore ways of improving opportunities for people already living with HIV in the Arusha area. This will include spending time at orphanages and centres providing training and support for HIV positive people and offering assistance based on the individual skills of project participants.
