Program description:

Have you ever wanted to become a real life Game Ranger? Here is your chance to take the first steps with our introductory field guide and game farm management course.

This 12 day practical course is situated in Big 5 Private Nature Reserve & Moholoholo Game Farm, conducted in Limpopo Province. It will allow you a first hand and practical insight into becoming a Game Ranger and managing a game farm.

This course is very hands on and is ideal to add onto an existing Worldwide Experience to gain more valuable knowledge.

The Basic Game Farm Management & Ranger Guide Course is ideally suited for those wishing to pursue a conservation-orientated career, as for people wishing to improve their own personal knowledge of wildlife and game farming. There is no entry level required to enrol for the course; however a basic knowledge of game conservation and the veld would be helpful to the student, although this is not essential.

The course is condensed into 12 days covering various aspects of conservation and survival skills, helping to give you a greater understanding of the African bush and how to manage a game farm.

It is ideally suited to people wanting an introduction to a conservation orientationed career and those wishing to improve their own personal wildlife knowledge. Examination on completion with certificate issued.



The subjects covered in this course include:

Game Farm Management:

-          Fencing and law requirements

-          Fire – breaks and block burning

-          Situation of waterholes

-          Habituate evaluation

-          Bush clearing and making of roads

-          Game Capture, culling etc.

-          Skinning and treatment of skins

-          Animals diseases and how to handle them

-          Handling and treatment of injured animals

-          Basic snake identification

-          Snake bites and treatment



General:

-          Birds, insect and tree identification

-          Spoor identification of all game

-          Practical tracking down of “ Big 5 “

-          Interpreting wildlife sounds

-          Habits of animals

-          Handling of firearms, what calibre and ammunition

-          Basic 4 x 4 skills

-          Safari etiquette for both lodge and trail set-ups

-          Nature conservation and the law

-          Basic ecology, geology, astronomy



On completion of the course, students will be required to complete both a practical and theoretical examination. Students, who pass the final examination, will be awarded a certificate of success. The course is accredited by F.G.A.S.A. – {Field guides association of South Africa} the South African Wildlife Society and P.H.A.S.A. – {Professional Hunters Association of Southern Africa}

Those who successfully complete the training course and wish to pursuer a career in the wildlife and game ranch industry in the Lowveld will be assisted as mush as possible by referring students to various companies and Game Farm who are looking for employees.

Location

Moholoholo is situated in the Limpopo province about sixty kilometres from Kruger National Park (Orpen Gate) and a mere 30 minutes from Hoedspruit airport. The Limpopo is a eco-tourist destination where mountain ranges rise suddenly and dramatically out of bushveld plains. On the slopes of these mountains you will find indigenous forests, placid streams and beautiful waterfalls.

Much of the land is unspoilt providing sanctuary to large numbers of game. Game reserves are found all around the region with a large abundance of game in the area.



Accommodation

A maximum of 12 persons can be accommodated per training course to enable the Training Guide to give individual attention to each student.



Sleeping accommodation during the course is in:          

A typical lodge set up comprising thatched, cabins in a secluded camp

A bush camp situated in a “ Big 5 “ Game Reserve

Around a campfire under the stars in a “ Big 5 “ Game Reserve

Three meals a day are provided for you whilst on the course. All meals are prepared communally whilst out in the bush but are prepared whilst staying at Moholoholo. Food will consist of healthy wholesome meals with some traditional African dishes.
