Program description:

The Orientation Year offers cultural history studies, artistic work, crafts, and 6-8 week volunteer placements. Participants are challenged to see how their own inner world meets the outer world.  In this meeting the questions arise: “How do my experiences form me?” “What in my experience is my own?” and “What is common to humanity?”

In group projects and activities, students learn how each person contributes to the dynamic social process.  Through individual projects (artistic, crafts and the placement) students develop their own creativity and initiative.

Main subjects during the year:

Historical/contemporary cultural issues - the study of developments in art, science, philosophy and religion.  These studies illustrate how consciousness has evolved, giving a perspective on the past and its relation to our time.

Placement - six to eight weeks of volunteer work in a social or environmental project.  Students have worked in North and South America, Europe, Africa, India and Asia.

Group dynamics and community - developing awareness of how we live and work together, and the relationship of the individual to the group and to the wider community.

Other subjects include inner development, practical work, music, drama and biographical studies.
