Program description:

"Raleigh offers an experience that you could not have travelling by yourself, a place to meet life-long friends, develop skills and memories in a special place. A once in a lifetime experience unlike another I will probably have the chance to take part in."

James Sale, Malaysia expedition.

Raleigh International is a well-established charity with over 23 years experience providing adventure and challenge expeditions. Our 5 week expedition gives you the choice of either a community or environmental project, plus a team-based adventure challenge.

A taste of what’s ahead on a Raleigh expedition

Community project

You will have the opportunity to experience first hand how communities in the Borneon state of Sabah live. As well as contributing to education or water projects, you will also organise community activities such as a sports day for the village and may be invited into the local’s houses.

Environmental project

With the rich biodiversity and abundant wildlife of its rainforests, there are ample opportunities to help preserve the local habitat or make it more accessible working alongside resident scientists and rangers. You could take part in research projects around the highly protected and world renowned Danum Valley, contribute to preparatory work for a hanging suspension bridge or build a trail for scientists in Imbak Canyon to help preserve its pristine virgin jungle.

Team-based adventure challenge

This is the perfect finale to your expedition. Working with a team of people that you already have got to know well, it will challenge both your mental and physical stamina, test your leadership and teamwork skills amidst remarkable scenery.

Raleigh International also runs expeditions to India, Costa Rica and Nicaragua for 10 to 4 weeks throughout the year. If you are aged 17-24, join an expedition as a venturer. Those aged 25+ can apply as volunteer managers to help lead and facilitate the expeditions for young people (full training is given therefore commitment is approximately 8 to 13 weeks). Roles include project managers, medics, logistics managers, drivers, communications officer, finance managers, administrators and photographers.

Thanks to our partnerships we often work in national parks and areas which other tourists don’t have access to.

Safety permeates everything we do and we have represented the industry in developing safety standards.

Working in small teams in a new environment, you will develop key life skills which will enhance both your professional and educational prospects.
