Program description:

helping with the renovation and improvement of facilities of the village of Gaesil...working on the vegetable allotments, feeding chickens and organising activities for local children of a small community...teaching English to children...these are just some of volunteer opportunities available through Concordia in South Korea

What is Concordia? Concordia's aim is to encourage international youth exchange as a means of promoting personal development, greater cultural awareness and international understanding.

What are International Volunteer Projects? International Volunteer Projects bring together individuals from around the world to participate in two to four week projects. Volunteers work as part of an international team to support community-based initiatives that would not be possible without their help.

What types of project are there? Over 1500 projects take place every year so there is a wide range of options to choose from. Generally projects fall into the following categories: environmental; construction; renovation; archaeology; agriculture; working with children or youth; social work; working with people with special needs; arts or culture; festival work; and teaching.

Why do an international volunteer project? To experience different cultures, ideas and beliefs and also share your own...to work alongside local people in local communities, thus gaining a real insight into their country, cultures and traditions...to learn new skills and broaden your horizons...to meet new people and explore new places...to be part of a global movement working towards equality and peace between all people...to make a difference even when you only have a short amount of time to spare.

Benefits and advantages of the program:

" [...]I really enjoyed making the boat and entering it into this big competition. It was amazing to see all the other boat designs which people had obviously spent months making. I also enjoyed playing football in a bath of tomatoes at the Tomato festival, and managing to stay as dry and as clean as possibly in the process. The work was hard and often not enjoyable at the time of doing it, however once it is over you feel great and quickly forget the hard work, replacing it with the thought of wonderful cooking and socializing with your new friends". (Verity Cope, South Korea, 2007)

"I spent a wonderful four weeks in Korea, the first two in one summer camp, the third week traveling independently with other volunteers to see some of the beautiful Korean countryside, and the last week in a second children’s camp. The two camps were very different- with the first having more basic facilities but much more enjoyment orientated whilst the second was well equipped, but heavily invested in by Volvo Korea and so involved much more pressure on us! Particularly at the first camp, where there were a few free hours left in the day for us to socialize, we made really great friends with all the other volunteers, European and Korean. I learnt so much from them about other cultures, and the Koreans were always keen to organize activities for us in our free time to show us more of the country they are so proud of. The Koreans’ hospitality and the friends I made are the lasting memories I will keep from this camp!” (Celia, Williams, Hanmaum, South Korea, 2004)
