Program description:

The Kan Tan Project is a private ecodevelopment and cultural project working to create a centre to strengthen the indigenous spirit in a practical capacity.  Volunteers will assist with the creation of a traditional Brunka houses (ranchos) within the Kan Tan Preserve.  You will work and live with the Brunka people in Boruca village, gaining the opportunity to be a part of their community and learn about their culture.   The overall objective of the Kan Tan Project is to, over the next 6 years, develop a model of ecological development and Earth restoration, and to rescue the indigenous culture.

Six volunteers are needed to help primarily with the building of traditional indigenous houses on the preserve – the Brunka rancho.  The project will entail manual work connected to the construction of the house, as well as reforestation work in the surrounding forest, collecting materials for the building, carving furniture, organic agriculture and planting edible and medicinal plants.  All of this work will take place on the "finca" located outside of the village.  In addition to this, depending up on the programme, you may also be involved in activities within the community, such as teaching English, giving conferences on a theme of your speciality, or working in the school, participating in the collection of rubbish in the village, maintaining public places, or ecological activities and so on.  You will be living with a local family in the community, taking part in their traditions and having the opportunity to visit and learn from Brunka artisans.

Volunteers need to be at least 20 years old, self-motivated, fit and healthy, capable of undertaking manual work in hot tropical conditions, culturally sensitive and prepared to live in a relatively isolated village.  It is also necessary that you are able to speak at least a basic level of Spanish (preferably more advanced), otherwise you will not be able to integrate within the community, as no English is spoken.  Those with botanical or biological skills are an added bonus, as plants and species identification can be done.  In addition, those who have experience building and making furniture, such as carpenters or cabinet makers are most welcome!
