Program description:

"Probably the best and most interesting 3 weeks of my life … It answered a lot of questions and asked a few more too … I can’t tell how this experience has affected me for all the years down the line … I don’t think I’m ever going to travel as just a tourist ever again."

This is what one volunteer had to say about their experience in Tanzania.

Benefits and advantages of the program:

The People: Friendliness between cultures and tribes in Tanzania extends to a neighbourly ethic within communities. Community is important in Tanzanian life, and neighbours check in on each other regularly. Additionally, whenever a guest is in town, Tanzanians are expected to treat them with the highest respect and hospitality. Tanzanians will invite neighbors over to meet their guests to prove their kindness and generosity. Despite not having many material possessions, Tanzanians are warm and friendly. They appreciate what they do have, and therefore expect those who can afford to dress professionally to do so. Because women are responsible for family life and provisions, they are held to a particularly high standard of respectful behaviour.

The Community: Unlike much of Tanzania, which is mostly savannah and scrub, the area of Arusha is very lush. An agricultural centre of Tanzania and the base for northern safari parks, the city of Arusha was born from rural roots unlike the capital of Dar es Saalam. The village of Patandi, in the township of Tengeru, is a small farming village. In the morning, you can watch villagers walking down from the mountains with baskets on their heads heading off to school or to town for a day at the market selling their goods.

Volunteers in Arusha, Tanzania, are involved with caring for infants and children, teaching children, teaching English, assisting teachers, observing and assisting local medical professionals, caring for people with disabilities, working with people affected by HIV/AIDS and assisting teachers of special education.

Bagamoyo (Arabic for “Lay down your heart”) is a small city located in the coastal region of Tanzania, about 45 miles from Dar es Salaam, the financial capital and largest city in Tanzania. Visiting Dar will give volunteers a taste of a bustling African city, where people who have traveled from all parts of Tanzania and Africa come hoping to find good jobs and “city life.”

Volunteers in Bagamoyo may be involved with caring for infants and children, teaching children, teaching English, assisting teachers, working towards women's empowerment, sharing their professional skills/experience, working with people affected by HIV/AIDS, observing and assisting local health professionals, and assisting teachers of special education.

The Kilimanjaro Region is dominated both geographically and spiritually by Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent. Moshi is the capital town of the Kilimanjaro Region, located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The waterfalls, coffee plantations and banana fields create an incredible setting for the Cross-Cultural Solutions programmes. The name Moshi means "smoke" in Swahili and the town earned its name when it was the routing center for trains going from Tanzania to Kenya. Though the train no longer offers that route, Moshi still attracts many visitors, who are drawn to its beauty and its relaxed spirit.

Volunteers and interns in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, are involved with caring for infants and children, teaching children, teaching English, assisting teachers, working towards women's empowerment, sharing their professional skills/experience, observing and assisting local medical professionals, caring for people with disabilities, working with people affected by HIV/AIDS and assisting teachers of special education.
