|
Physical strength is a high priority in schools sports in Mongolia, with the most popular sports being wrestling, horse riding and archery. However a number of other sports are starting to catch on due to a general tide of Western influence that has been creeping into the country ever since the collapse of the old Soviet Union.
The younger generation is beginning to get interested in football, basketball and volleyball but the schools we work with are often very poor and cannot afford the necessary teaching cover for children to participate in these sports on a regular basis. Even when they can, the standard of tuition is poor, because the teachers have simply not had the required sporting background.
Projects Abroad are based in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. During term time there are many opportunities to get involved with coaching a variety of sports. If you specialise in a particular sport and have a good knowledge of the game and how to coach it effectively then you will be much in demand, but the schools we work with are very happy to have coaches with a simple love of sport in general, and the enthusiasm to develop the same in the others.
