Program description: |

Restoration volunteers are required for Cerro Seco, Ecuador. Cerro Seco is a dry tropical forest biological reserve in Bahia de Caraquez, a small coastal town in the Manabi district of Ecuador. The reserve contains one of the best examples of rare tropical dry forest on the coast of Ecuador (only 2 percent of Ecuador’s original dry forest remains intact). The reserve is Ecuadorian owned and operated. In 1998 Bahia de Caràquez was devastated by the combined effects of El Niño and an earthquake. Since then it has rebuilt itself as an "Eco town". There are many projects running who aim to ensure that the future of Bahia de Caràquez is green, and that the people of Bahia are aware of the importance of preserving the unique environment around them. The work in the Biological Reserve of Cerro Seco is one such project.
Objectives
To create a web of volunteers to fortify the conservation programs in the North Central Coast of Ecuador, where there are a wide variety of life zones with a great diversity of endemic and native species.
These tropical forests of the North Central Coast of Ecuador are considered some of the most fragile on the planet with the highest number of endemic and native species per square meter (According to the research of Holdry-Cañadas.) In reality, this area is in great danger due to deforestation, destruction of habitat, and lack of education to develop new productive sustainable activities.
By forming these volunteer programmes they are helping to build a biological corridor for the province of Manabi, which reaches from the south province of Machilla to the north province of Esmeraldas, from the coast to the interior of the country.
