The Turtle Conservation Project is based on a beautiful beach at Kosgoda in the far South of Sri Lanka. Local coastal communities have traditionally relied on turtle eggs as a source of food and income. One nest of eggs often containing 120 eggs is worth 3 times the average local weekly wage! This means that almost all the nests laid on the beach have been robbed of their eggs. Aiming to increase the number of turtles in Sri Lanka, the project employs local people (who would otherwise rely on eggs to survive) to patrol the beaches and guard the nests on the beach. However this is a huge job and they need lots of extra volunteers to help them day and night.
It's not all about animals though! On the community development side, you will also talk to children in local schools. Simple practical lessons on the importance of turtle conservation mean that the next generation of Sri Lankans will be more likely to help conserve them. Communication with local people is also important, as are presentations to tourists in the surrounding hotels so that as many people as possible are aware of the problems and their own possible influence on the situation.
You'll live 5 minutes from the beach and patrol the beach with Nest Protectors and Research Officers (who help keep biological records of the turtles that nest here), watching for turtles, new nests and hatchlings. We hope that with increased help from volunteers, turtles such as the Leatherback, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley will be visitors to Sri Lanka for many years to come.
