"We helped construct a community centre in the secluded village of Carona, which could only be reached via a 20km walk along a beach. The people were hugely welcoming, warm and friendly and everybody was truly sad when it came to leaving. It was a wonderfully rare and unbelievable experience."
Ayesha Khan, Costa Rica and Nicaragua expedition
Raleigh International is a well-established charity with 23 years’ experience in providing adventure and challenge expeditions. Our expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua offers you the opportunity to combine first hand experience of remote community life in Nicaragua, one of the region’s poorest countries, with the rewards of worthwhile environmental projects and challenging treks in the amazing bio diversity of Costa Rica.
A taste of what's ahead on a Raleigh expedition
Community project
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere and natural disasters have contributed to a severe lack of community infrastructure. Raleigh is helping improve living standards in some of its remotest communities by constructing fresh water systems and local school facilities. You could be living with villagers in the beautiful subsistence farming communities of the Miraflor reserve, learning Spanish and enjoying a unique cross cultural experience. In Costa Rica you will be working in partnership with indigenous communities to improve the health and educational services in the Indigenous Reserves.
Environmental project
Over 27% of Costa Rica is designated a protected territory and our projects are designed to preserve the local habitat and make it more accessible. You could help build trails and bridges across the country’s National Parks network, help transform the former penal island of San Lucas, a stunning tropical expanse, into a wildlife refuge, or build a ranger station in the jungle terrain of Piedras Bancas.
Adventure challenge
An experience that will test both your mental and physical stamina. Slay the beast of the 270km Dragon trek and experience Costa Rica’s friendly culture as villages welcome you to stay at the end of a long day’s trekking. Or undertake the Coast to Coast trek, taking in rainforest, rivers and mountains on your route from the Pacific to the Caribbean.
Raleigh International also runs expeditions to India and Malaysia throughout the year. If you are aged 17-24, join an expedition as a venturer for 10 to 4 weeks. Those aged 25+ can apply as volunteer managers to help lead and facilitate the expeditions for young people (full training is given therefore commitment is approximately 8 to 13 weeks). Roles include project managers, medics, logistics managers, drivers, communications officer, finance managers, administrators and photographers.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
Raleigh International has a permanent field base in each expedition country enabling us to build long-term partnerships with the government, NGOs and local communities and thus deliver projects that meet a genuine need and are sustainable. Thanks to our partnerships we often work in national parks and areas which other tourists don’t have access to.
Safety permeates everything we do and we have represented the industry in developing safety standards.
You will be joining volunteers from different lifestages and backgrounds, including young people from the the host country for a true exchange of cultures.
Working in small teams in a new environment, you will develop key life skills which will enhance both your professional and educational prospects.
The friends, memories, experience and skills you'll take away from a Raleigh expedition will stay with you for life. You will be joining a network of 30,000 people with similar attitudes and outlooks, keen to share their stories and keep the Raleigh spirit going.
