Volunteer in India by teaching English, helping out with local orphanages, volunteering in community development, helping with HIV/AIDS projects, working in health and assisting with rehabilitation projects. Combine volunteering with adventure on a Mini-Adventure in India. Get a better sense of this amazing country though a two week Language and Culture program.
TEACHING ENGLISH PROGRAM:
Because India is one of the fastest growing and developing countries in the world, as with other developing nations, unemployment is a substantial problem here - millions of India's citizens are unemployed. On a national level, English proficiency is needed to incorporate people into various developing industries. In India, the opportunity to learn and study English is only available in highly expensive private schools or private institutions. Because of the monetary conditions in India, many Indian families cannot afford this education. Thus, many people are held back in their employment opportunities. Therefore, volunteers, assisted by India Volunteer program, will teach English in India free of cost. Volunteering in India, you will teach English, mostly at the public schools or local organizations, which will enhance future opportunities for those in need of employment.
Teaching English in India is very challenging, but it is also very rewarding. Most of the India Volunteer teaching projects are located in and outside of the Indian capital, New Delhi, a home of rich Indian heritage. Students in public school are basic learners: boys and girls (from ages 6-16), in class sizes of about 20-35. Also, volunteers can teach English in a variety of non-profit schools, which aim at helping destitute citizens. If you have other skills, like knowledge of computers or drawing, you can teach these along with English as well. Most of the time, you will be provided with a fixed-curriculum English book to help you teach, and you will be requested by school authorities to develop your own projects that aid students in learning English. Teaching English in India project not only benefits students at our projects area, but you will also get tests of Indian culture and people through teaching. Not only will this India volunteer program benefit your students, but also this opportunity is sure to change your life - leaving unforgettable impressions of Indian culture and Indian life burned within your heart forever.
ASSIST WITH LOCAL ORPHANAGES:
One-sixth of the world's population is located in India, and millions of children are born and raised in the streets. Because of the overwhelming numbers of homeless children, volunteers work at orphan-based centers, where they provide orphans with much needed attention. These orphans need hope, encouragement, and patience. We have India volunteer opportunities in conjunction with various local organizations. For several years, our partners have provided non-formal education, health care, and other creative activities for orphans. Our volunteers have the opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of some of the most deprived, neglected children in the world. Your volunteer work will be to assist our local staff as they work with children and directly involve them in various skill-development activities, which will help to improve their lives in the future.
Your work will be vigorous, but much appreciated by the kids. While you work with the children, you will lead them in various activities such as games, art, sports, and music. You will accompany them in various activities and become a positive influence in their lives. Centers, run by volunteer in India's partners, are accommodating 50-70 boys and girls between the ages of 5-12. You will work with the children in small groups. Although this is not an English teaching placement, you will have the opportunity to teach English during your stay in our orphanage. If you have skills in sewing, painting, tailoring, crafting, typing, and computing, please transfer your skills to these needy children.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:
Global Crossroad's Volunteer in India program sponsors a community development project in cooperation with a women's coop located in a rural village outside of Delhi. This project concentrates on women's development and empowerment, and provides assistance, education, and practical skills to women. With confidence in themselves and their place, these women are finally able to rise within the rather rigid outlines of Indian society.
Working with 5 different women's development, education and training centers, volunteers can make a strong positive contribution to the quality of these women's lives, and help them develop the pride and self-confidence which they previously lacked. Volunteers will be dealing with such issues as:
Micro credit development
Training in social and practical work skills
Informal and formal educational opportunities for women
Drug addiction
Family issues
Volunteers may also help with various tasks such as preparing and delivering project reports, designing and preparing training programs, and participating in various skill development activities, training sessions and teaching programs.
HIV/ AIDS PROJECTS:
In India there is a very high stigma concerning HIV/AIDS. People have limited knowledge about HIV/AIDS and lack the proper information. Many impoverished people are not educated enough to understand the causes of AIDS and how it is transmitted. People who become infected are often excluded even from their own family's home and from society. In Delhi various organizations are working to improve HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and care of HIV-infected patients. The goal of these groups' activities is to foster awareness of the disease and work to change attitudes and behavior towards those unfortunate enough to be infected. They are involved in:
Providing shelters to HIV/AIDS patients
Counseling HIV-positive people as well as their families
Treatment for HIV-positive patients
Skill-sharing and training, such as wood working, candle making, and tailoring, so that infected people can earn their living
Training programs for counselors
Volunteers in this project would be working with these local groups. Some duties may include:
Counseling activities
Skill-sharing and training activities
Rendering help in treatment (trained volunteers with a health care background only)
Helping to prepare and present educational programs
Any related helps requested by local organizations
HEALTH PROJECTS:
As a very large, densely populated country, a large portion of India's population is living below the poverty level. They don't have access to the very basic necessity of life. One very important need is primary health care. Many villages exist who don't have doctors or basic health care facilities. Many people die every day due to the lack of a nearby clinic or hospital. Volunteers with health care backgrounds can do a lot by working or assisting in the private health sector, teaching health tips in informal education centers or schools, and in other local organizations.
Any volunteer interested in joining the health care programs must have a certificate or proof of health care experience, such as an ID as a medical student, nurse, or doctor; or certificate of experience. Volunteers without professional knowledge are not allowed to work in this program because of the potential risk. Volunteers mainly help local doctors and medical staff in the treatment of patients. Volunteers can also perform other duties at the hospital, such as:
Record keeping
Sanitation
Nutrition
Treatment for minor injuries.
Counseling patients, etc.
Notice: Placement in the health sector is a bit challenging as local health centers and hospitals are very concerned about the skills and qualifications of volunteers. We request volunteers to consider other projects for volunteering in India instead of the health care project if they do not have strong backgrounds and skills in medical areas. Available alternate placements include HIV/AIDS Awareness program (educational only, with no hands-on treatment of patients), orphanage or teaching placement, or other community development programs.
REHABILITATION PROJECT:
This area of volunteering India presents a massive, challenging task for any welfare or caring organization, which works with at-risk youth. Sadly, many young people in India today become addicted to drugs. In Delhi, many rehabilitation centers work with these youth to help return them to a normal, productive life. Rehabilitation programs re-integrate these young people into society as independent, self-sufficient individuals through counseling and training to give them the social and working skills they need to become solid citizens in the future.
Addicted youth are not the only beneficiaries of the rehabilitation centers' care. Separate rehabilitation centers care for physically and mentally challenged children and adults. The counseling and therapy they receive in these centers enable many to eventually take up a normal life in Indian society. Here, too, volunteers can make a great difference in these people's lives. Many of the same tasks are available in these centers as well, including counseling, teaching, and sharing practical skills such as sewing, wood working, and candle making. Working in the wonder volunteer project in India, you share your talents and time with these marginalized people, and help them reclaim a life of dignity and independence.
MINI-ADVENTURE IN INDIA:
The India mini-Venture program is a meaningful opportunity for volunteers who wish to explore the beauty of India, its culture, nature, and people while volunteering for orphans. The India mini-Venture program aims to help orphaned children -giving them much needed hope and guidance. As a volunteer you will be teaching health education/English/sanitation to poor kids. You also help children to develop their creative talents working with them to draw pictures, play games and perform various creative activities. After a few days of working for the poor children, or any other activity that interests the volunteer, India volunteers will organize a 4 day of tours of India where you will experience India's rich past, exciting future, wonderful culture, and natural beauty by visiting some of popular tourist destinations of Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra (Golden triangle). In our mini-Venture you enrich your volunteering experience by visiting some of cultural wonders of India.
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM:
The Language and Culture program - India is a two weeks cross cultural program designed primarily for volunteers who want to know and learn directly from India's life experiences. Much of our emphasis is on language training, cultural experience and immersion. Indian language and culture program is designed for volunteers, who taking a break from busy lives in their home countries, come to India to experience and learn from foreign lands.
