Program description:

Volunteer in Peru by teaching English, working in an orphanage, on health projects or on conservation projects. Volunteer in Peru, and travel back in time to the great civilizations which once flourished - and then passed away into the mists of history, leaving nothing but tantalizing remnants behind. Wander through the ruins of the great lost city of Machu Picchu. Visit the Inca capital of Cuzco, parts of which still stand forth in the modern town built by the Spanish atop the Incan remains. View the colonial remnants of the Spanish conquistadors, and see the vestiges of many other old Andean civilizations which are no more.

Our Volunteer Peru program is located in Huancayo, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Mantaro Valley, home to several artisan villages and Incan ruins. Here you can experience the distinct culture of the Huancas, with their colorful costumes, energetic dances, and high quality artisanship.

Our volunteer in Peru program offers volunteers spectacular glimpses of the people and landscapes of Peru along with the opportunity to help others in a variety of community development projects.

Work in an Orphanage:

Social violence and poverty in Peru have left many children behind, depriving them of the parental love and care they deserve. This Volunteer Peru project aspires to change that situation by providing a secure and caring alternate home. The orphanages which have been developed in Peru support and protect these children, providing food and accommodations in a comforting atmosphere. Volunteers mainly help provide educational opportunities and boundless love for the children.

Depending on their skills and interests, volunteers can teach English, lead the children in songs, music, dance, or other activities, teach cooking or handicrafts, act as a mentor, and generally just spend quality time with the children.

Your help for these children gives them an opportunity for a better life in the future. Your assistance also keeps these children off the streets and out of trouble, so they have a chance to grow up to be happy, productive citizens as adults.

Health Projects:

In this Volunteer Peru health project, volunteers will work alongside Peruvian doctors in local medical centers in rural and urban areas, performing a wide range of procedures from delivering babies, to suturing wounds, treating endemic diseases, and creating and facilitating vital public health and vaccination campaigns.

In addition to assisting the doctor with patients, volunteers should be prepared to help develop and implement public health campaigns. This will involve spending time outside the health center, actively participating in the community. Further depending on experience and willingness, a volunteer nurse may be asked to oversee the Health Center in the doctor's absence.

Medical students will initially be able to learn from the more experienced doctors/volunteers in the Center. In addition to attending to patients, medical students will be asked to develop and facilitate vaccination and public health campaigns.

Health placement requires ID (medical student, health Professional). Volunteer doctors, nurses & medical students work according to their skills and experience.

Conservation Projects:

Live and work with the Ashaninka people in the Vilcabamba Mountains, near the Ashaninka Communal Reserve and the Otishi National Park.

The Ashaninka Communal Reserve has an incredibly diverse and fragile ecosystem which sustains the hunting activities of the native communities in the region. This Volunteer Peru conservation project offers a unique opportunity to join the Ashaninkas in the villages of Betania, Poyeni and Shevoriato, as part of a pilot project centered around rainforest conservation, economic development, and indigenous rights in the Tambo River region of Eastern Peru.
