1. Humanism - not terrorism!
At IICD we work towards achieving the objectives outlined in the Declaration of Human Rights. Our agenda is to encourage all humanitarian forces to stand up, unite and do something about the increased dehumanization occurring within our societies.
2 . Redress the balance!
Africa is the poorest continent in the world. A continent that has suffered a history of underdevelopment: slave trade, colonization, apartheid, war and which today is hard hit by the worst epidemic in human history, HIV/AIDS. Be ascertained that something must be done and have the courage to participate. We do not talk about pity or charity. We talk about human dignity, education, capacity building, providing tools and instructions, so people get a chance to become the driving forces in their own development.
3. The art of development
Development is about liberating the powers of the many and to get all people involved in shaping the future. Just as IICD trains Development Instructors to be themselves the driving force in their own development, the Development Instructors' task at the projects in Africa is to empower the people to likewise become the creators of their own development.
4. Test your comfort zone
"Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go." TS Elliot At IICD, Development Instructors will be encouraged to confront risks by challenging their own barriers of fear. Creating development in the world as well as developing ones own potential and capacity, is by nature moving into "the unknown" to which fear and discomfort is associated. Moving those barriers of fear holds huge potentials - for the Development Instructor and for the world.
5. Learn to communicate in a new language!
All Development Instructors need to master one second language. The training program takes place in English and the language at the projects in Angola and Mozambique is Portuguese. In the rural areas in Africa, where most of the projects are located, many people speak only local Bantu languages - Setswana, Manica, Shona, ..... Language is a key to understand the culture of a people and it is thus important to have some knowledge of the languages spoken in the area of the project.
6. Expand you own world view
"From one place you don't see far - even with your eyes wide open!". To learn you need to be mobile. During the 14 or 20 months program, the Development Instructor gets a chance to face the reality of the world and its people and phenomena from many different angles and to explore their own role within this reality.
7. Equal opportunities
IICD offers a unique program to people of all ages and walks of life. People, with a desire to travel the world and do good at the same time. At IICD we take pride in being open to every one regardless social background; ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age or any other division set up to distort the very basic fact that we are all human beings.
8. Africa needs social advocates
"To know her, is to love her!" - someone rightfully said that. One of the aims of the Development Instructor program is to spread information about Africa and global development issues and to be the voice of the African people in the United States of America.
9. Live and learn in an international environment
People from many parts of the world find their way to the Development Instructor program. World wide, Development Instructors come from over 80 different nations. At IICD, we typically have 10 different nationalities represented. This is a great chance to learn how to work and live with very different people - the art of maintaining the uniqueness of the individual and at the same time the needed strength of the unity and cooperation.
10. Learn to become a leader
In the program the Development Instructor has every opportunity to apply theoretic knowledge into practical experience. Globally, learning how to organize, lead and get development to take off are qualities in high regard. Today and in the future, leaders who understand how to mobilize people, work with diversity, and manage social programs are necessary.
