Program description: |
 |
|
Building new classrooms for a primary school and carrying out HIV/AIDS awareness activities in Central Uganda...building a health centre in a village close to Kampala...helping out in an orphanage...these are just some of volunteer opportunities available through Concordia in Uganda
What is Concordia?
Concordia's aim is to encourage international youth exchange as a means of promoting personal development, greater cultural awareness and international understanding.
What are International Volunteer Projects?
International Volunteer Projects bring together individuals from around the world to participate in two to four week projects. Volunteers work as part of an international team to support community-based initiatives that would not be possible without their help.
What types of project are there?
Over 1500 projects take place every year so there is a wide range of options to choose from. Generally projects fall into the following categories: environmental; construction; renovation; archaeology; agriculture; working with children or youth; social work; working with people with special needs; arts or culture; festival work; and teaching.
Why do an international volunteer project?
To experience different cultures, ideas and beliefs and also share your own...to work alongside local people in local communities, thus gaining a real insight into their country, cultures and traditions...to learn new skills and broaden your horizons...to meet new people and explore new places...to be part of a global movement working towards equality and peace between all people...to make a difference even when you only have a short amount of time to spare.
The main short term programme for the summer, with projects in over 60 countries world wide, is available on our website every year at the end on March. Opportunities are available in winter and spring as well. If you want more information don't hesitate to contact the office.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
"I met some fantastic people, volunteers and locals alike, and managed to infiltrate the Ugandan culture through the volunteer project in a way that no ordinary tourist could have. The welcome and treatment of us throughout the project by the local community was so warm and we were privileged enough to be invited to attend ceremonies taking place in the local area.
The work we achieved was very worthwhile; continuing with a health centre, providing AIDS education to the local community and spending time with the children of the school. I learnt new construction techniques and was amazed at the capabilities of the locals; they were great to watch in action. The children of the school were also wonderful and I loved spending time with them, and one of the reasons I intend to go back to Uganda is to visit them.
I think all of the volunteers had a great time, both during the day and the night. The nightlife was wonderful, dancing to the beat of the African drums around a campfire and going to the town to have drinks and chat with the locals.
I am so glad that I took part in the volunteer program and I am very sad to have had to leave. It was an experience that has given me many happy memories and it is one which I can’t wait to repeat". (Sam Carter, Kikooba Health Centre project, Uganda, 2006)
"The international volunteer experience is a wonderful opportunity to meet people from all backgrounds and walks of life and in many cases removes the previous misconceptions showed by many regarding developing communities. The tirelessly warm welcome from locals and strong, positive ethos between international volunteers will help to cement friendships, future relations between North and South, and some of the most amazing memories/experiences of my life. I can’t wait to go back". (Paul Knowles, Kikooba Health Centre project, 2006)
