Program description:

Volunteer in orphanages, teach English, work on health projects and HIV projects, work in special educatin projects (with the deaf and mute), volunteer on rural community projects, in elderly care homes, in eco-tourism and protected areas and in bird conservation.

La Ceiba is a very beautiful town located on the northern coast of the Carribean Sea. As Honduras is developing its tourism industry, recent focuses have been on La Ceiba which is called The Capital of Tourism because of its strategic location. La Ceiba is receiving many English speaking tourists. For these Honduran students to become part of this growing industry, they need to be proficient in English. Our volunteer program in Honduras offers opportunities for international volunteers to teach English to children and young people attending primary and secondary schools in La Ceiba and surrounding areas. These areas are very poor, and they lack native English speaking volunteers. In this program, volunteers will help the children learn the correct usage of English words, and master English grammar. In an average class, there are about 30 students. You will need to have some knowledge of the Spanish language in order to interact with them.

Orphanges/ Children at Risk:

Global Crossroad's Volunteer Honduras Orphanage volunteer project in Honduras offer volunteers a marvelous opportunity to help children who used to live on the streets and have been rescued by child care organizations to provide them care, love, education and recreation. You will get involved with a range of activities that offer learning as well as love to orphaned children.

In our Honduras volunteer project, you can work part time or full time. You will help the children by teaching basic English, playing games, dancing, drawing and other activities using your skills and imagination. You may be asked to help with other tasks around the orphanage, such as preparing food or doing laundry. Language expertise and knowledge of child psychology are advantages but not necessary. Helping these children will give them the opportunity for a better life in the future. In Honduras there are many teenagers involved in gangs and criminal activities, mainly due to the lack of love and attention from their parents. Help keep these children off the streets and out of trouble, so they have a chance to grow up to be happy, productive citizens as adults.

Teaching English:

Health Projects:

Unfortunately, public health care in Honduras is one of the worst in Latin America. There are very few good hospitals, and even middle class families are often unable to afford such good hospitals. Hence, assistance is needed from able volunteers in our Volunteer Honduras Health Project, in which these volunteers serve in local hospitals which are often poorly-equipped.

Volunteers in this project support the local doctors and nurses. You may work in different capacities, from providing observational assistance to providing assistance in surgery, based on your skills and experience. Also depending on your skill level, you can help take care of the patients, check blood pressure, distribute food, and work in the pharmacy, or with a gynecologist. There is always something to do in the public hospital and clinics in La Ceiba and surrounding areas.

RED CROSS

Working for the Red Cross is another option open to volunteers. You may assist with activities similar to those described above. In addition, you may be asked to carry out office duties as well.

Health projects need a health care background or previous volunteer experience in a hospital or clinical setting.

HIV/AIDS Program:In recent years, Honduras has experienced a rapid increase in HIV infections, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all cases reported in Central America. Roughly 80 percent of all reported cases are attributable to heterosexual transmission, and studies indicate that between 1 and 4 percent of pregnant women have been infected with the virus.

Volunteers in this project will be involved in various care and support activities. Volunteer activities will include counseling, including prevention counseling and the design and use of complementary IEC (information, education, and communication) materials; working in diagnosis and treatment of minor opportunistic infections and palliative care; referring patients in some cases to public or private sources of more sophisticated care, including the diagnosis and treatment of TB and sexually transmitted infections and anti-retroviral therapy, including prevention of mother-to-child transmission; and working in IEC activities to reduce the stigma of being HIV-positive and combat discrimination.

School for Special Education (Deaf and Mute):

Special Education for deaf and mute children is a complex field of volunteering requiring special talents and interest. However, this Volunteer Honduras project allows you to play a crucial role in the lives of deaf and mute children. Your tasks in this project would be to help improve or develop the communication level of the children. You will mostly adopt communication options such as auditory-verbal, bilingual-bicultural, cued speech, oral method, acoustic method, Rochester method, speech reading (lip-reading), manual sign languages (PSE, ASL, Signed English, Signing Exact English), sign supported speech (simultaneous communication) and total communication while working with them.

All volunteers in this field need to use sign language to provide the primary students an opportunity to learn it and help them feel more confident with themselves and their ability to communicate with other people. In addition, you will also be involved in other curricular and extra-curricular activities such as games, painting, dancing and so on.

Work with Rural Communities:

San Juan Pueblo, a small agricultural town close to La Ceiba (40 minutes to the west), offers an ideal place for volunteers to become involved in social work in the heart of this small community. Opportunities range from teaching English at a primary school or working as a technician (mechanics, electricians, working in a bakery, repairing stoves, fridges, and electrical supplies) to working in ornamentation or growing vegetables. Volunteers can learn how to make furniture with wood, from hiking up into the mountains to obtain materials to the finished product. Volunteers can also work in horticulture, help care for cows and horses, work in construction, do missionary work, etc.

If you are looking for a Honduras volunteer project to match your individual interest, then this project is for you! Just let us know what you want to do.

Elderly Home Care:

The elderly care center of La Ceiba needs the help and encouragement of volunteers like you to help the residents live a happier, more fulfilling life. Together with local organizations in La Ceiba, Global Crossroad gives volunteers the opportunity to work with these elderly people and make a significant difference in their lives.

In the volunteer Honduras elderly care program, you will help the residents with several activities such as cooking, gardening, teaching them English, bringing the Lord's word, keeping the residents company and talking to them. The presence of the volunteers brightens their day and brings joy to their lives.

Eco-Tourism/ Protected Areas:

The Volunteer Honduras ecotourism projects support the local people on the north coast of Honduras and help them understand the importance of nature and its preservation. Volunteers will be involved in a range of conservation activities and help to develop the natural resources of Honduras in a way that both preserves the delicate flora and fauna of the area, while helping the local people earn a living from those resources without exploiting or damaging them.

As a volunteer in Honduras natural areas, you will help in developing the eco-tourism model for the local community and assisting with activities such as constructing trails, cleaning the park, making signs, guiding the tourists, rafting, kayaking, hiking, tree planting, etc. There are three different projects in Honduras where volunteers can contribute their time and energy.

1. Pico Bonito National Park (Fupnapib): Located near La Ceiba on the North coast of Honduras on the Caribbean Sea, this national park offers a perfect place for bird watching, hiking, and enjoying the breath-taking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay Islands.

2. Cueroy Salado Life Refuge: Located in the outskirts of the Pico Bonito National Park, this amazing refuge is in need of volunteers interested in nature. Volunteers will work to preserve the manatees and monkeys, clean the park, drive boats, guide tourists, and assist with customer service. In their time off, volunteers are welcome to visit the nearby beaches.

3. Sustainable Ecological Development Project: In this program, volunteers mainly perform office duties in the La Ceiba headquarters, assisting the directors and their technicians. Some knowledge of forest engineering and computer skills are required for this placement.

This wonderful 2 week Mini-Adventure/volunteer in Honduras project takes you on an off-the-beaten path adventure in the most beautifully untouched country in Central America.
